The Ram ProMaster is more equipped than larger motorhomes.
There are many homebuilt camper trailers but this Ram ProMaster 3500 is our favorite. We love it for two reasons. This house has everything you could need in a legitimate home, and more. The house is still in progress and is a home-owner full-time. This is a great thing for reasons that we will discuss later.
Let’s meet Sheridan. Tiny Home Tours’ video shows that he is a former electrician, who has now become a travel writer and photographer outdoors. To build his own home on wheels, he bought the ProMaster and put his electrical knowledge to great use.
There are no less than 11 outlets inside this van and 28 dimmable led lights that run on four circuits. The water tanks are equipped with sensors that monitor their levels and the gray tanks feature powered drains that can be opened and closed by flipping a switch. The van is four-season-ready with a heater, rooftop air conditioner, as well as a large solar panel that provides 370 watts to his four 100-amp-hour lithium batteries. The alternator in the van charges the batteries. An emergency cut-off switch cuts off power draw from the batteries when the charge drops too low. So far, power consumption has not even come close.
His van is impressive beyond the electric realm. He fits a huge refrigerator/freezer, oven, and three-burner stove into the van’s middle section. Use of Space is his way of referring to it. The driver station is separated from the living space by a fixed bulkhead. Here he mounts the sink and separate water tank. The driver’s dining and work area is set up at a small drop-down table. A full bathroom is located across the kitchen with a composting toilet and shower, as well as an electric fan to reduce odors.
A queen-size bed is the centerpiece of all this. The controls for heat and air conditioning can be found on the wall near the bed. A touchscreen control for the entire electric system is located at the opposite end of the bedroom. Under the bed is the garage, which houses the batteries, power inverter and primary 30-gallon freshwater storage tank. Sheridan’s garage houses water controls for a second shower. If an external water source is available Sheridan can connect to it without having to drain his tank.
Sheridan, in the video, states that he has been living in the van full-time for approximately a month, despite the fact that it is not fully finished. This is intentional, as he wants to know exactly what his needs before advancing further. The van will be stored in additional storage, but it will be tested in real-life conditions before it is built. This is the ultimate form customization. It is amazing to think of how many other projects have been rushed to completion only to need additional work to correct a bad decision.
We can only say, “Well done Sheridan.”
