The pickup crashed into the baggage pick-up area wall and caused damage to one of the luggage carts. After colliding with the counter for renting a car, the vehicle came to an abrupt halt. Because the last flight for the evening was about 20 minutes prior to the incident, the airport was empty of passengers at the time of the accident.
The driver had been driving recklessly and police tried to stop him before the accident, but the pickup continued on its way. The pickup then passed through the airport’s border fence. The video shows the pickup speeding along the tarmac to the terminal.
According to the Tampa Bay Times, airport personnel estimated that the damage to luggage carsousels alone would take months to fix and cost around $250,000.
The cause of the incident is not yet known by police, but they speculate that it could be a drug impairment or a medical problem.
