Abarth Race-Spec 124 Rally Gets Gravel Kit For 2019

It is now much easier to drive and tune the car.

Abarth will introduce a heavily modified version of its 124 rally vehicle (based on the Fiat 124 spider), which will compete in the racing season. Abarth claims that it has collected a lot of data over the two previous seasons of the 124 in motorsport. This update will be available to customers and is designed to make the car easier to drive and tune.

The powertrain optimizations include a new calibration of the differential with four mappings of the traction control: high, medium, low grip and wet. The button on the steering wheel allows drivers to select the mode they prefer and adjust the engine torque delivery according to the conditions. The company’s engineers have also improved the gearbox to enable faster gear engagement during acceleration.

The most significant novelty in the 124 rally car was the addition of a gravel set. This allows for a unique setup that can be used on gravel roads. This kit increases ground clearance by 1.57inches (40mm), adds suspension travel and new brake discs compatible to 15-inch wheels. It optimizes grip on rough terrain and reduces unsprung weight. The car is also available on 18-inch wheels for tarmac riding.

Modifications to the engine have also resulted in a more linear torque curve and more torque at low speeds. This makes driving easier and more efficient, Abarth claims. It also allows non-professional drivers to perform better. It is interesting that no hardware modifications were made and the improved torque delivery results from only careful calibrations, which promote “smoothness” and prompt throttle response.
