According to reports, the premiere will take place at Tokyo Motor Show.
Rumours of a faster NSX are rumored all the time, but this one is much more solid as it comes from a highly reputable source – Forbes. According to a report, Acura has been working on an enhanced version of its electrified supercar. It will unveil it in a few months. According to rumours, the go-faster NSX would get the “Type R” suffix at the 46 Tokyo Motor Show in Japan in October.
The report explains some technical details, including the increase in horsepower to 650 horsepower. We can expect an additional 77 horsepower over the standard NSX. We don’t know much about torque. However, it is expected that this one will increase over the current 476 pounds-feet (645 Newton meters).
It is not clear how power gains can be achieved. This could be done by either upgrading the twin-turbo, 3.5-liter V6 engine or by tweaking the three electric motors. It is possible that both the ICE as well as the electric motors could be modified to produce more power. The Type R version will have the SH-AWD system, but Acura may choose to use a different setup. Recall that the NSX GT3 racecar uses a rear-wheel drive system, and eliminates the hybrid arrangement. The road car’s nine speed, dual-clutch automated transmission is replaced to make way for a six-speed sequential.
The Acura NSX TypeR will get a stiffer suspension setup, and possibly larger carbon-ceramic brakes to match its power gains. Modified bodywork to boost aero efficiency is also on the agenda, with a front splitter and rear wings adapted from the -NSX-GT racecar.
The standard Acura NSX is priced at $157,500, making it the most expensive car in America. However, it is only a matter time before it is overtaken by the $200,000 Mercedes Maybach GLS. Forbes also predicts that the NSX Type R will surpass $200K.
The Tokyo Motor Show will open its doors to media this year on October 23rd with the first press day. The NSX Type R should be there. It will be designated Honda if it is going to be displayed, taking into consideration that the JDM-spec NSX comes with Acura’s badge.
