Acura RLX Sedan Dead In North America After 2020 Model Year

It will be available in the same markets as the Honda Legend.

The AcuraRLX is now out of production, at least in North America. Automotive News reports the Acura RLX luxury sedan will be dropped from the Acura lineup in 2020. However, it won’t disappear completely as it will still be sold in other markets where it is known as the Legend under the Honda label.

Honda sent the news to its North American dealership network. According to Automotive News, a representative said that the company’s RDX and MDX SUVs were now the top-selling vehicles for North American buyers. This is true when you look at Acura’s sales figures for 2019. With 62,876 units sold last year, the RDX was Acura’s most popular vehicle. Together, the RDX and MDX racked-up nearly 115,000 sales.

The RLX was not nearly popular. Acura had just 1,019 RLX units sold for the whole year. Although 2019 was a rough year for most sedan, RLX sales in 2018 (the same year that it underwent a major refresh) only reached 1,931 units. Acura’s flagship sedan was performing poorly in showrooms long ago.

Why did the car not get more attention from buyers? We’re certain that Acura executives are also considering this question. The sedan was launched in 2014 to a mixed reception. Critics criticized the sedan’s bland styling, low-end performance and lackluster price. While the exterior styling was better, it did not make a strong connection with customers. The RLX was a hybrid of all-wheel drive and rear-drive. It turned the front wheels in the standard version, while all-wheel drive was only available in hybrid.

Acura won’t completely abandon cars in the U.S. however. The ILX, TLX and DLX continue to sell, but sales of both sedans can’t compare with the MDX.
