After 25 years, Nissan Sentra and Tsuru production will cease

The end of the era of the cute sedan.

After 25 years of assembly, Nissan’s iconic Sentra will be retired from production. Tsuru still makes the cute sedan, but the new safety rules will end production.

Despite being one of Mexico’s most popular cars, the Tsuru continues to be a top-seller. This is due to its low price and low ownership costs. However, the car’s platform is too outdated to comply with modern safety regulations. The B13 architecture was built in 1980s. It is not compatible with airbags or advanced driver-safety features.

Mexican officials are slowly working to make cars sold in Mexico conform to European and American safety standards. Soon, all new cars will be required to have anti-lock brakes and airbags.

The Sentra was introduced to Mexico in 1992 by Nissan Mexicana, who modified it for local markets. The Tsuru is essentially identical to the Sentra of 1991, but has a different Renault-sourced transmission and clutch. From 1997 to 2011, the sedan was the most loved car in the country, until it was overtaken by the Volkswagen Jetta.

The Tsuru’s base price is approximately $7,000 and it remains the most popular choice for taxi firms in the country.
