It’s like a scene from a movie but on a smaller scale.
Do you remember the three-minute film 405? Most likely not. It was a short film that was released at the start of the millennium and featured a commercial landing in California on an empty stretch I-405. It was one the first viral videos to be made, and it made use of the internet’s blossoming network to distribute copies.
Tennesse’s incident was exactly the same as that in Tennessee, except it was on a smaller scale. Also, the video wasn’t staged. According to Knoxville Police, the small plane that had run out of fuel had to make an emergency landing on I-640. It is possible to imagine the reactions of the drivers at that moment – certainly something they don’t see every day.
It was a Cessna 172, which has a pilot and two other passengers. It flew from Sky Ranch Airport, near Alcoa Highway, to Island Home Airport in South Knoxville. Capt. D.J. Corcoran, the pilot, said that he realized he ran out of fuel and needed to get to his destination. He decided to land an emergency landing on the highway in order to refuel.
The pilot was competent enough to land smoothly, and there were very few cars in the way while he did the dangerous maneuver. The entire incident resulted in zero injuries.
The pilot’s friend helped the plane to refuel in less than an hour. It was then back on the air. However, the police had to temporarily block the interstate to allow the plane to have approximately 2,000 feet runway space to ensure a safe takeoff.
Highways are one of our favourite places to drive. Here we can extend the legs of our cars and reach legal speed limits. This could be a landing spot for small planes, as the story shows.
