While SUVs are the current focus, the Italian brand will not abandon the sedan.
Alfa Romeo has a busy schedule ahead of it to expand its SUV lineup by adding the Tonale to the Stelvio. In the near future, the latter will be given a mid-cycle facelift. A new entry-level crossover called Brennero will arrive in 2024. A large, electric SUV will be added to the high-riding lineup around 2026 and 2027.
But where does this leave the Giulia? Sedan lovers will be happy to know that the famed Italian brand won’t be abandoning cars. Jean-Philippe Imparato, CEO Alfa Romeo, stated Automotive News Europe that there would be a new generation of the BMW 3 Series rival: “We aren’t abandoning the Giulia. The future Giulia will be electric-only.
The Giulia will continue to be a popular sedan, but its internal combustion engines are likely to disappear soon. The stunning sedan will soon get an ICE-powered next-generation model, as Alfa Romeo announced it would become an EV-only company by 2027.
What is the reason for this? Spy shots have shown that a new Giulia should be on the market by 2023. It will be around for several years before the next-generation model is released.
The head honcho at Alfa stated that the compact Tonale crossover has taken the Giulietta’s place. It was originally a Eurocentric hatchback, but its indirect replacement is designed to be global in order to better suit the company’s expansion plans.
Imparato previously admitted that plans exist for one-off and limited-edition sports cars. This hint suggests some of them will draw inspiration from the Duetto 33 and Tipo 33. Alfa Romeo is aware that cars are on the back burner as they know there’s more money with SUVs. The firm plans to have four by 2027.
Stellantis hopes that its new Tonale will be the driving force behind a renewed sales boom, aiming to sell more vehicles than 100,000 per year. This could happen as soon as 2023, which would double the number and quality of vehicles delivered to customers compared to 2021’s 52,000 vehicles.
