A few doors can make a big difference.

Alfa Romeo took sports car racing by storm when it teased two key monikers, GTV and 8C, in June 2018. Both coupes were scrapped in a restructuring plan. This involves investing in the Tonale as well as another high-riding vehicle in order to capitalize on the ever-growing demand for crossovers. This means that there is no coupe on the horizon, so enthusiasts have little to look forward too other than the Giulia GTA or its track-focused GTAm sibling.

Aksyonov Nikita didn’t stop him from dreaming up a new Alfa Romeo that had just two doors. He fired up Photoshop and played around with an image showing the Gran Turismo Alleggerita. This result is a beautiful Giulia GT Coupe, which is unlikely to be seen in the flesh to compete with the BMW M4 Coupe or Mercedes-AMG C63 Coupe.

Some argue that the GTA treatment would have made more sense on a Giulia Coupe, considering the original 1965 model had only two doors. The GTAm, which arrived a few more years later, also had a swoopy form so it was a bittersweet moment for Alfisti.

Alfa Romeo could probably convert the Giulia GTA to a coupe. However, considering that sales of both the regular sedan as well as its hot Quadrifoglio cousin have not been very good, it might not be worth the effort. The high-performance sedan is limited in production and only 500 units are available. Most of the units will reach European markets.

The ideal scenario is that Alfa Romeo could use the money it makes with its crossovers to buy performance cars that live up to the brand’s history. This is the same formula Porsche uses, although it sells more Macans SUVs and Cayennes than 911s and 718s sports cars. However, the Stuttgart folks keep making two-door models to please everyone.
