This time beats the Porsche Panamera Turbo, which was the fastest sedan.
Record breaking performances on the Nurburgring Nordschleife are quickly falling. The record for a production sedan was set by the Porsche Panamera Turbo just a few months ago at 7:38 seconds. The Alfa Romeo Giulia Quarifoglio has beaten that record by a mere 7 minutes 32 seconds.
It’s actually more about the Giulia taking back its record. The manual gearbox-equipped example was able to set a record of 7 minutes 39 seconds, but it was overtaken by the four-door Porsche. Alfa used an optional eight-speed ZF auto transmission to beat the manual car by seven seconds. The auto ‘box can shift gears in Race mode in 150 milliseconds. This is a lot faster than manual shifting.
Fabio France, an Alfa Romeo driver test driver, was behind the wheel during the lap. The on-board footage shows that the Quadrifoglio has a nice neutral handling balance but can swing into oversteer when there are big bumps in the middle of the track and quick switchbacks. It looks quite benign so even less skilled drivers should not have any problems pushing it.
Quadrifoglio’s twin-turbo, 2.9-liter V6 engine is the power source. It was ‘inspired’ by Ferrari’s twin turbo V8 motor. It produces 510 horsepower (380kilowatts) as well as 443 pound-feet (600 Newton meters) through the rear wheels. In 3.7 seconds, the sprint from 0-60 miles per hour is completed. The fastest speed is 191 mph (307 km/h). These cars don’t have the lily-livered speed limits that German cars are equipped with. It reached a speed of 176 mph (or 284 km/h) during the Nurburgring lap. This was on the Dottinger Hohe straight.
It remains to be seen if this record will convince buyers to move on from the BMW M3 or Mercedes-AMG C63 to the Giulia Quadrifoglio. It was launched in Europe several months ago and will be available in the United States by the end of this year.
