Alfa Romeo Reportedly Delays Larger Sedan Until 2021

This model would compete with the BMW 5 Series and Audi A6 as well as the Mercedes-Benz E-Class.

According to Automotive News, it appears that we will have to wait longer for Alfa Romeo’s larger sedan. According to Automotive News, Alfa Romeo has delayed the launch of its flagship four-door sedan until 2021. This is after the refresh of the Giuliasedan, and coincides with the update of the Stelvio cross-over, which was recently launched. The new Alfa Romeo will compete with the BMW 5 Series and Mercedes E-Class .

If it goes on the streets. Alfa Romeo had been hoping that the Giulia would give it a larger share of the American automobile market, but the sedan’s sales numbers have been disappointing. The automaker sold 5,494 cars in total over the past year, but only 916 Giulias were sold to new owners in August. BMW sold almost as many 3 Series cars in August than , with 5,379 units sold, compared to 37,170 total sold in 2017. Although no one expected Alfa Romeo would be able to dominate the market like other brands, executives at Alfa and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles are probably thinking about the bad performance.

There is some good news: sedan sales in the U.S. are well below the mark for all brands. Despite Alfa’s sales advantage, BMW 3 Series sales have fallen by more than 18% compared to last years. X3 crossover sales have increased 10 percent. Consumers continue to switch from sedans to crossover and sport-utility cars, which is a trend that continues across the board. The changing times may be part of the Giulia’s challenge, it would appear.

Alfa Romeo will likely closely monitor the development of its new Stelvio which went on sale in July. We believe that the current sales trends favor crossovers and that Alfa Romeo’s sales performance may be a better indicator of how buyers respond to a more mainstream Italian brand.
