According to reports, the Tonale, which has been delayed, will be launched in 2022.
Jean-Philippe Imparato, the new CEO of Alfa Romeo, is optimistic that the brand can do better in America, which is one of its most important global markets. Despite the 25% increase in sales during the first quarter, Alfa still needs to improve its ability to compete with its rivals. It needs more models, obviously.
Although Imparato praises Alfa’s two-model lineup, and calls it “fantastic”, in an interview with Automotive News he also admits that the automaker still needs to produce more models. A new small crossover will be available, but it will not arrive until the summer 2022, as Imparato is looking for a more powerful plug-in hybrid engine. According to reports, the Tonale will be launched in July 2020 and should arrive in the United States sometime in 2022.
Alfa Romeo has another crossover in the works. The Brennero was initially called the high-riding machine. It will be smaller than the Tonale, and it will use the same PSA eCMP architecture. The platform allows for a pure electric version. It is expected that the model will launch with a combination of EV, hybrid, or combustion powertrains. However, it may not be large enough to launch in the United States.
Imparato believes that Alfa Romeo is more likely to succeed in the US market with its new products and quality comparable to German counterparts. The Italian marque is currently 14th among 15 premium brands in America, with only Jaguar ranking below it. Imparato stated that it was important to improve our business model, in terms of product quality and economic performance.
Alfa Romeo will be able to ” more opportunities” expand its business after the merger of FCA and PSA. It will be able to access new technologies and even develop a new generation model in in collaboration with Lancia and DS, for a launch in 2024.
