All-New BMW 4 Series Convertible Comes With The Top Down

The sun was shining so the driver of the test vehicle decided to lower his roof and take in the spring sunshine.

Although demand for convertibles has declined in recent years, BMW believes a new 4 Series droptop is still a viable business case. The larger convertible, much like the Z4 roadster, will have a fabric roof. It will also be lighter and more simple to install. Because the roof folds down, the major transformation will result in a greater cargo space and less weight in the trunk. Our spy team captured the new 4Series Convertible in traffic. They immortalized a fully camouflaged prototype during a sunny day. The test driver raised the wind deflector and lowered the roof to enjoy spring. Although the car looks like it has the complete production body and final lights, the thick mask gets in the way.

The camo hides the decklid spoiler and built-in third brake lamp. The dual trapezoidal exhaust tips at the back are very similar to the 3 Series’ M340i. This is not an accident, since the new convertible from BMW will largely be based on the sports sedan thanks to inheriting the CLAR platform. Although we can’t see much inside the cabin, it’s not difficult to tell since the dashboard design is essentially taken from the 3 Series Sedan. An older spy shot from a prior batch shows the interior of the 4 Series Convertible. It is attached below.

The base U.S.-spec model will have a turbocharged 2.0 liter gasoline engine that produces 255 horsepower and 295 pounds-feet (400 Newton meters) of torque in both the 430i/430i xDrive. You can upgrade to the M440i model and get a 3.0-liter inline-6 rated at 382 horsepower and 369 lbft (500 Nm). The M340i sedan can sprint to 60 mph (99 kph), in 4.4 seconds with the RWD model, and as fast as 4.1 seconds with the xDrive model. The 4 Series Convertible is sure to be slower due to its heavier weight. Be patient as it may take a while for BMW to get rid of the annoying camouflage. The 4Series Coupe will be first to be released. Within a year, the droptop and then eventually the new 4 Series Gran Coupe could be available.
