Although they can be quite dramatic, police pursuits are always dangerous. The Grappler, a new device that can be used to stop vehicles fleeing police pursuits, was introduced a few years ago. It is now in use and, as you can see from the video, it is very efficient.

It happened in Phoenix, Arizona on April 29. Fox 10 News reports that a man was found unconscious inside a car at around 2:30 p.m. local. The police arrived at the scene and found weapons within reach of the driver , who was still seated behind the wheel . He eventually woke up and drove down the highway, smashing into police cars that were surrounding him. The officers didn’t pursue the man at that point but a police helicopter watched over the silver sedan, which looks very much like a Ford Fusion. Enter the Grappler. The video begins with aerial footage of the sedan, without any police activity. The video opens with aerial footage of the sedan without any apparent police activity. It appears that the suspect wasn’t aware they were there until the Grappler arrives. The device is basically a web made of high-strength straps which wrap around the rear wheel. Once deployed, it attaches to the police car’s front.

One SUV passes the sedan, while another follows. The vehicle is stopped dead after a mere 10 seconds. The chase is over when two other units appear from behind. The Grappler is a much more efficient PIT maneuver than one that causes a vehicle to spin out of control. This is exactly what happens. The suspect is not ready to give up without a fight. After a heated standoff, shots were fired and the driver was taken from his car and taken into police custody. The driver was charged with multiple offenses, including criminal damage, driving while impaired, weapons and drug charges and fleeing police. There were no injuries reported.
