Aston Martin DB4 GT Zagato Continuation Debuts At Le Mans

It is as rare as it is beautiful. . . It is also very expensive.

Although the Aston Martin DB4 GT Zagato from 1960s is a very rare race car, anyone who has been involved in automobile history and especially the golden age of racing knows it’s more than a rare car. It was handcrafted, lightweight and fast with a thin aluminum skin and a 3.7-liter straight six. While only 19 cars were made, Aston Martin is adding 19 more to the count. This project is part of the continuation series by the automaker. Aston Martin will present the first of this series at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in June at the famed French endurance track.

The stunning DB4 GT Zagato Continuation remains faithful to the original racer in every way. Aston’s Heritage Division headquarters is where the cars are made. It uses a mix of modern technology and handcrafted craftsmanship. The DB4’s body is digitally generated, but the aluminum panels that make up the body are shaped by hand using the exact same techniques used by artisans and engineers for decades. A lightweight tubular frame is under the panels. These are race cars and an FIA-approved roll box is included in the package.

However, not all things are unique. Carbon fiber is used to make the leather-trimmed racing seats. The engine has undergone even more changes, literally and metaphorically. It now features a 4.7-liter version the original 3.7L inline-six. The DB4 GT Zagato Continuation produces over 390 horsepower (291 kilowatts) and is all channelled to the rear wheels via a four-speed manual transmission.

The new Zagato joins a growing number of Aston Martin Continuation cars , including 25 DB4 GTs that were introduced in late 2016. The DB5 Goldfinger Continuation vehicle is currently in production. Deliveries are expected to start next year. However, the DB4 GT Zagato model will be available for customers starting late this year. However, it is not cheap to own a factory-built replica of such a rare car. The car is priced at a reasonable PS6 million, or $7.6m in U.S. dollars.
