The four-door Rapide will be effectively cancelled by the crossover between DBX/Lagonda.
More automotive deaths have been caused by the SUV brigade’s continued march. High-riding, all-purpose vehicles are also having an impact on niche automakers such as Aston Martin. Motoring.com.au reports that the four-door Rapide will leave the building after the DBX or Lagonda arrive.
Andy Palmer, Aston Martin’s chief executive, is quoted in the report as talking about the future British brand and specifically the DBX. It will be Aston Martin’s first SUV, and the expectations are high. Palmer explains however that the DBX’s production will not exceed 5,000 units regardless of how much demand. While maintaining some exclusivity is important, Aston Martin wants to ensure that the DBX is built correctly.
The Lagonda is another crossover idea that was introduced recently. It is expected to hit the market in 2023. At that point, Palmer states that production for both large-person movers and the DBX will be limited to 7,000 units – 4,000 for DBX and 3,000 for Lagonda. The Rapide, with its smaller accommodations and cargo capacity, is no longer a viable option. There are two vehicles better equipped to transport more people than the Rapide.
The Rapide has been around for almost a decade and is still in great shape. The all electric Rapide E that was recently launched will be replaced by an electrically driven Lagonda while the DBX replaces the V12-powered standard model.
It remains to be seen if either of the replacements drives as well as the super sedan, but we will certainly pour one out once the last Rapide leaves the factory.
