Ingolstadt-based automaker, Ingolstadt, looks back at one of its most significant models.

BMW M is not the only German company celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. The first Audi 80 was launched globally just in time for 1972’s Summer Olympics. The Audi 80, coded B1, is believed to be the first compact sedan or the B series. The Audi 80 is a key part of the discussion on the most important Audis of all time, due to its contributions to the brand’s history and sales.

Aside from being a True classic Audi claims the 80 and its successors were pioneers in major innovation. They include the four-cylinder TDI and Quattro drives with self-locking centers differentials, as well as the dual-clutch transmission and rear-axle sports differential.

The innovations include the five-cylinder turbo engines, which were used in the first RS model. This demonstrates Audi’s expertise with Vorsprung durch Technik.

Oliver Hoffmann, member of the Board of Management of AUDI AG Technical Development, stated that “in an impressive way, The Audi 80 demonstrates Vorsprung durch Technik at Audi.”

The Audi 80 was light, with the base two-door model weighing in at 1,841 pounds (835 kg). The Audi 80 was compact with a wheelbase length of 8.1 feet (4.47 meters) as well as an overall length 13.7 feet (4.18m).

The Audi 80 was highly praised by both the international and local press for its exemplary handling and low fuel consumption. Shortly after its introduction, the Audi 80 was awarded the 1973 European Car of the Year Award.

It was also a huge commercial success in Europe, and in the USA where it is known as the Fox. It was the first Audi million-seller and, together with its successor, Audi A4 has already produced 12.5 million units (from A1 to B9) as of today.
