The name of this vehicle is still a mystery.
Audi’s rugged division was updated recently with the A4 Allroad and A1 Citycarver. It appears that Ingolstadt-based Audi is currently working on a second member, slightly higher than the entry-level model. New spy photos show a lifted prototype of the A3 racing around the Nurburgring.
This trial car The camouflage covers both the front and back fascias, but it’s not the most fascinating part. It seems that the machine is slightly higher than a regular A3 hatchback. Although it’s not common for high-riding cars to chase lap records, Audi wants to ensure that the suspension system provides the right balance between good off-road performance and solid road handling.
The new A3 addition was initially known as the A3 Allroad, but Audi recently renamed the lifted A1 to A1 Allstreet. It makes sense that the larger hatchback receives the same name. The German automaker may also decide to remove the Allstreet suffix from models that do not have an all-wheel drive, and instead give the Allroad name to rugged models that come with Quattro.
Audi’s AWD system is not shown in this prototype. It appears that it’s powered by a traditional combustion engine, without electrification. Previous test cars featured a charging port at the front left fender, indicating a plug-in hybrid powertrain underneath the hood. Reports suggest that all-wheel drive may be an option.
This new A3 high-riding A3 will likely be released later in the year, whatever its name. This prototype has a small amount of camouflage, which indicates that the development and testing of this new high-riding A3 are almost complete.
