It is a visual take on the Urbansphere concept but it is visually more refined.
China, with its population of more than 1.4 billion people, is a large market for automakers. Crossovers and SUVs are a big trend in China, as they are everywhere else. However, there is still a strong demand for sedans or minivans. German car manufacturers have increased the rear legroom of their saloons, while other brands have launched luxury people-movers. Examples of this include the Lexus with the LM, and Buick with GL8.
Audi wanted the Urbansphere to the Beijing Auto Show in the spring. Due to the resurgence of coronavirus cases, the event was delayed indefinitely. The Four Rings chose to reveal the showcar online, but did not call it a minivan. It is a minivan, despite its sophisticated styling and luxurious interior. Imagine if Ingolstadt had the idea. Here is the place where the speculative rendering steps in.
The minivan is now fully electric, as this is the future of the automobile industry. It would look great next to one of Audi’s E-Tron SUVs. The zero-emission Q5 ETron, another locally-built EV, was launched in China earlier this year.
Audi has not yet spoken about the Urbansphere being produced, but we aren’t surprised. The company is currently finishing up the PPE platform that was the basis for the not-a minivan concept. The A6 E-Tron will soon be available and will likely produce a wagon version that will mirror the A6 Avant E-Tron concept.
