Audi’s launch control is a bit erratic.
Drag racing legend Daniel Abt has started a YouTube series called “Drag Racing”. The first installment features an Audi S8 running against a Porsche Panamera 4S S-E-Hybrid. This is a great example of electrification at work.
These two cars are almost identical on paper. The S8’s V8 produces 563 horsepower (420 Kilowatts) as well as 590 pound-feet (880 Newton-meters), of torque. The sedan is 5,082 pounds (2.305 kilograms). The sedan rides on Abt wheels. This is because Daniel’s family owns the tuner.
Panamera 4S E-Hybrid is powered by a V6 engine and an electric motor, generating a total power output of 552 HP (412 kW) & 553 lb-ft (553 Nm). It is slightly lighter than the Audi at 5,071 pounds (2.300 kilograms).
Both models have winter tires and all-wheel drive.
Audi’s first race is a great way to learn more about it. The launch control will turn off if it is left on for too long. The Porsche wins this race and the S8 is left behind.
The second race is much more competitive and things go well. The Porsche wins the race. The Porsche Panamera 4S E-Hybrid Porsche Panamera does the quarter-mile in 11.44 seconds, according to the numbers at end of video. This distance can be covered in 11.74 seconds by the S8.
A test from a roll is also available, which highlights the benefits of electric motors’ instant torque. The Porsche accelerates faster despite having less power. It makes the Audi seem so slow.
Audi is currently working on a refresh of the S8 and the A8 lineup. Only minor changes are being made to the exterior design. According to reports, the powertrain is not changing. The occupants will be able to enjoy an updated infotainment program. For the 2022 model year, the revised models will be available for purchase. A Maybach-fighting Horch model will be available.
