How do you feel about electrified RS model?
Audi doesn’t hesitate to push the boundaries of electrification in Europe. The automaker makes plug-in hybrid versions of the Q5, Q7 and A6 in Germany. It is extensive, yes, but it is understandable, as emission regulations in Europe are becoming more strict.
We have yet to see Audi equip its RS models in electric motors. It’s not surprising, since Audi RS models are cars intended for enthusiasts. Simply putting the electric alongside an RS could spark some discussion among purists.
However, this doesn’t mean Audi isn’t open for hybrid variants to its RS range – Ekkehard Kleindienst (Audi’s head of Product and Technology Communications) recently stated that they are.
He said, “These are truly born and bred RS model… Coming with a plug in hybrid powertrain,” he told Australia’s Motoring.
Kleindienst continues to explain the benefits of hybridization. These include increased efficiency and a better driving experience for customers. It’s like hitting two birds at once – the combustion engine is designed to appeal to the emotional side of customers, while the electric powertrain supports the brand’s electrification strategy.
Even though the mention of RS-hybrid models was only passingly made, it is possible that they are in the works. We might have to wait for Ingolstadt to officially unveil one at this time.
