Audi skips 2019 Detroit Auto Show; Joining BMW and Mercedes Future events could see the automaker back in attendance. Audi will be joining its two German luxury competitors by skipping this January’s 2019 Detroit Auto Show. This announcement follows similar departures by BMW and Mercedes from the show. According to Automotive News, Audi stated in a statement that “Audi has had an extensive and successful history at NAIAS [North American International Auto Show],” introducing countless models that Audi customers love today.” “We have decided to withdraw from NAIAS for 2019. We will continue to evaluate Auto Shows individually based on the timing of product introductions and the overall value they bring from a consumer and media perspective. It’s not certain that the brand will be absent from the 2019 show, but it doesn’t mean it won’t be there forever. Audi is expected to evaluate each case and decide whether it should be present at auto shows. Audi showcased several new products at this year’s show. This included the Q8 concept crossover that is expected to go into production shortly. The CES in Las Vegas, which takes place just weeks before Detroit’s show, has been a strong competitor over the years. The electronics show draws larger crowds and not only draws media attention away form Detroit, but also reveals product details from automakers who would otherwise have waited to see the Detroit show. All the latest news from the North American International Detroit Auto Show Detroit organizers, the Detroit Auto Dealers Association, are considering moving the show from January in order to avoid conflict with CES. This would be a drastic move that wouldn’t take place until after the 2019 show, as it’s already planned. There will be plenty of floor space available for other automakers to expand their displays, thanks to the three German automakers. Mercedes might not attend in 2019, but Daimler announced that Mercedes would be absent next year’s show. However, CEO Dieter Zetsche stated, “But, I very much expect to be back in 2020 with some product launches.” He made this statement after he had announced that the decision was difficult.
