Audi’s new Double-Digit Naming Scheme Will Make You Confused

Audi's new Double-Digit Naming Scheme Will Make You Confused
Each new Audi will have a number on the back of its vehicle that ranges from 30 to 70.

The current Audi vehicle lineup is represented by one letter followed by an accenting number. This represents both the vehicle class and vehicle type. It’s quite simple. For example, the A1 is the smallest car-based option in the lineup. The Q7 however, is the largest SUV offering (until at least the Q8).

Audi has decided to make it even more complicated for reasons that we don’t understand. Along with the current model designations and engine types, two numbers will be added to every Audi vehicle’s back. These numbers will vary depending on power output and will be between 30 and 70.

For example, the number 30 will be displayed on models that have a power output between 109 horsepower and 128 horsepower (81 kilowatts and 96 kilowatts). The number 45 will refer to a power output between 226 hp and 248 hp (169 kW and 195 kW). The number 50 will refer to cars that produce between 281 and 308 horsepower (210 to 232 kW), while the number 55 will indicate cars that produce between 328 and 368 horsepower (245 to 275kW).

The number 70, which is at the top of the range will represent Audi’s performance category, models that produce more than 536 horsepower (400 kW). Each number will be placed beside any existing TFSI, TDI or G-tron badges. This chart should help you to understand the new nomenclature.

30 = 109-128 HP (81-96 Kw)

35 = 147-160 HP (110-120 Kw)

40 = 167-201 HP (125-150kW)

45 = 226-248 HP (169-185 Kw)

50 = 281-308 HP (210-230 Kw)

55 = 328-368 HP (245-275 Kw)

60 = 429-455 HP (320-340 Kilowatt).

70 = 536+ HP (400+kW).

These number combinations can be used to identify Audi’s product line, particularly those with hybrid and electric powertrains. They also serve as a hierarchy within Audi’s model range. “Engine displacement is losing its importance as a performance attribute for our customers as alternative drive technologies become more relevant,” said Dr. Dietmar Voggenreiter (Board of Management Member for Sales and Marketing, AUDI AG).

“The distinction between performance levels is made possible by the clarity and logic that comes with structuring the designations according power output.

The new Audi A8 will make the changes, and will be available starting in the fall. Two six-cylinder engines with power outputs of 286 hp and 340 hp (or 383 and 455 kW respectively) will be predesignated with the “55 TFSI”, and “50 TDI” badges. All Audi models will receive the new designation in the months to come.
