The Bentley Continental GT will feature a new direct-injection V8 engine of 4.0 liters. It will debut late next year.

Audi and Bentley, sibling brands, are developing a direct-injection 4.0 Liter V8 engine for the Continental GT and future Audi performance cars.

Bentley needs an engine to increase fuel economy and reduce emissions in its Continental GT. The current engine is a 6.0-liter W12 engine. Bentley claims that the new direct-injection V8 of 4.0 liters will reduce CO2 emissions by 40% on the Continental GT model. Near the end of 2011, the engine will be available in this Bentley model.

“We are adapting the vehicle for our purposes so it delivers Bentley driving characteristics,” Brian Gush, Bentley head of chassis development and powertrain development said to Whatcar. This means that the luxury carmaker will get lots of torque in the low- to mid-range.

The engine’s output and specifications were not disclosed. Gush could not confirm whether the new powerplant would be turbocharged, but it is hard to believe that it wouldn’t, given Bentley’s need of torque and the VW Group’s use turbos.
