A version all-electric is also possible.

New spy photos of the refreshed BMW 3 Series show more detail and reveal the vehicle’s new exterior. These spy photos were taken on German public roads. Our spy cameras captured this prototype and revealed more details, particularly at the front. The camouflage foil masks many of the details, but we can still see the whole picture.

This early look shows that things are looking great. While the 3 Series radiator grille is unchanged in dimensions, the new 3 Series headlights are slimmer and feature LED daytime running lamps. The bumper’s lower section will likely get new air intakes. The grille pattern on the lower portion of the bumper could also be modified depending on the trim level.

The exterior will look very similar to the current sedan, with the exception of the taillights design. However, interior improvements will be significant. The curved display, which was introduced with the iX in the 3 Series LCI, will be available on the 3 Series LCI. It is already being used in other BMW products. Additional wheel options and new exterior colors will be added to complete the visual enhancements.

The prototype is powered by a plug in hybrid powertrain. We expect both the hybrid and combustion engines to continue working without major changes. An all-electric model will be the biggest change to the 3 Series engine family. The electric 3er is likely to be based on the Chinese model due to its longer wheelbase. It could be a global product that complements the model’s existing engine family of gasoline, diesel, and hybrid units.

The refreshed 3 Series is expected to make its debut in the first months of next year. It will be available in Europe by the end of the summer 2022. This means that it will most likely arrive in the United States in 2023.
