BMW 3 Series Facelift: Sedan, Touring and Alpina

There are 27 photos of the three prototypes.

The current generation of BMW 3 Series has been launched worldwide in March 2019. This is less than three years after its initial market debut. Bavaria is changing quickly and the company has already developed new technologies that it plans to incorporate into its top-selling model. BMW has begun a mid-cycle refresh of the 3 Series family. Our spies captured three prototypes being tested on public roads.

The teams from Germany and Sweden were at the right place at right time. We received 27 photos of the 3 Series facelift in wagon and sedan shapes as well as the Alpina B3 Touring. While we’ll be discussing the performance model shortly, let’s first look at the regular 3er LCI variants.

The exterior revisions are not very interesting. The camouflage covering the front fascias on the prototypes is evident. We are also told that the disguise conceals new headlights. The clusters could be slightly smaller and get new daytime running lights. The radiator grille could be slightly larger, but not nearly as large as the M3 or M4 kidneys.

Inside the cabin, the most important changes to the 3 Series family’s facelift are likely. The new curved display of BMW’s iDrive 8 infotainment software could be the highlight. The facelift will likely include new trim options and more leather-upholstery combinations.

The revised Alpina B3 Touring trim is the third prototype in this gallery. The 3 Series’ sportier version is the Alpina B3 in Touring trim. However, it’s not as tough as the M3 or M4. The model will be offered in a wagon or sedan, powered by a 3.0-liter twin turbo straight-six engine. The factory-modified 3 Series will have the same visual changes as the facelifted model, but with some minor interior modifications.

The most exciting news regarding the 3 Series facelift will be the launch of an M3 Touring. It is expected to arrive by the end of this year, making it the first fully-equipped BMW performance wagon in this market. Customers will have to wait till 2025 for an all-electric 3er.
