We like 516 lb-ft torque.
These controversies around the new BMW 4 Series is nothing new. Since the debut of the sports coupe, there has been a lot of hate speech about its design. As if that wasn’t enough, BMW just added another questionable model – a diesel-powered model M-branded.
The 3.0-liter inline six diesel engine powers the M440d xDrive. It produces 340 horsepower (250 kilowatts), and a mountain-moving 516 pound feet (700 Newton-meters), of peak power. An eight-speed torque converter auto and an xDrive AWD system deliver power to all four wheels.
Bavarian brands claim that the diesel sports coupe can accelerate in 4.6 seconds from a standstill up to 62 miles an hour (0-100 km per hour). This seems like a solid figure for a car with a compression ignition. The car’s average fuel consumption is between 5.7 to 6.3 liters/100 kilometers (roughly 37 to 41 miles per gallon).
A smaller, but still more powerful, model is also available. The 430d xDrive Coupe has 286 hp (210 kW) and is powered by a tuned version of the same engine. The 0-60 mph (0-100 km/h) time is just 5.1 seconds. Fuel consumption is between 5.2 and 9.9 liters per 100 kilometers, or 40 to 45 MPG. The mild-hybrid system includes an integrated 48-volt starter generator for both 3.0-liter diesel engines in the 4 Series Coupe.
