BMW 7 Series Facelift: Designer explains the Giant Grille

It turns out that the huge grille is not controversial.

The 7 Series’ new grille is massive and polarizing. The world was not happy with BMW’s decision to increase the size its kidney grille on its full-size sedan. The world was shocked by the 2020 Toyota Supra. Some were thrilled, others were horrified.

Just in case you were looking for more information from the Bavarian brand Alexey Kheza (BMW designer) offered some insight into the new design via a video on BMW Blog.

Kheza says that the 7 Series’ humungous grille was created to be in better contact with the rest the BMW lineup. It is also proportional to the car’s place in the lineup. In short, bigger sedan, bigger grille. The 2019 BMW X5 as well as the X7 – larger SAVs have a bigger grille.

Kheza said that the larger grille allowed (or required?) Kheza to add. They designed a lower bumper with no mesh that was left from the prefacelift model. The body-colored panel on the lower bumper directs air into the air curtains, which improves aerodynamics. It turns out that the very things people dislike actually serve a purpose. This is not a test to determine who the true fans of the brand are.

This could be a good explanation for why BMW decided to make its grille monster-sized. However, Kheza was positive about the new styling due to the signature and new appearance of the fascia. We’ll take it, if you ask us.

Kheza provided more details about the 7 Series’ overall design.
