This is a bold statement.

BMW’s move into front-wheel drive cars isn’t as significant as many enthusiasts believe. The latest BMW X1 example is one. The new 2020 BMW 1 Series offers a completely new offering. It features a new platform, and a front-wheel-drive drivetrain. BMW said it was necessary for the segment and did not compromise the driving characteristics.

A spokesperson for BMW, Florian Moser, stated that Which car “there’s almost no way to tell which drive is front- or rear-wheel driven.” He also added “not like 15 year ago.” It will be up to the driver to determine the truth of this statement. BMW has made significant progress in the compact segment with the introduction of front-wheel drive. Moser quickly pointed out that the change to front-wheel drive wouldn’t mean there would be a floodgates of new front-wheel driven BMW models. The front-wheel-drive 1 Series offers the best package for this segment.

BMW revealed the third-generation 1 Series, which features the M135i hot-hat, an all-wheel-drive model that boasts a 302-horsepower (225 watt) 2.0-liter engine. The 1 Series’ interior space is where the greatest gains are made. Rear-passenger knee room expands by 1.3 inches (33 millimeters). The rear cargo area increases by 0.7 cubic feet (20 Liters), and can now hold 13.4 cu. 338 liters) of stuff. The front-wheel drive layout means that the overall length and wheelbase of the new model are both shorter than the old one.

BMW claims that there are no significant differences between rear-wheel and front-wheel drive, but the true test will be behind the wheel. Although some may not like the new layout, they can rest assured that the 1 Series’ front-wheel drive isn’t a Trojan horse designed to change the layout of all BMWs.
