This SUV was made with the same engine as the McLaren F1 racecar, which won Le Mans.
Its name “Le Mans” is due to the borrowed 6.1-liter powerplant from the McLaren F1 race car. This engine won the 24-hour endurance race. The X5 Le Mans engine actually had more power because BMW didn’t need to comply with regulations.
After removing the air restrictors, the engine produced more than 700 horsepower (+120 HP more than F1) and fitting a custom exhaust system. This X5 was a formidable force in the mountains, with a torque of 531 pound feet (700 Newton-meters). The X5 was able to reach 62 mph (100 km/h in 4.7 seconds) and 193 mph (311km/h on the Dottinger Hohe section at the Nurburgring. This is quite impressive for an SUV that weighed more than two tons and featured brick-like aerodynamics.
The Green Hell lapped the German track in 7 mins 49 secs, seven seconds faster than the Audi RSQ8. The X5 Le Mans is a bonkers McLaren SUV, as Woking’s peeps insist that they won’t make a sports utility car.
The Le Mans concept is more than just its engine. It also featured a V12 LMR prototype’s engine. However, the unique was rear-wheel driven and came with a six speed manual transmission. We liked the BBS gold wheels and the bucket seats. Although it had a huge engine at the front, the weight distribution of the vehicle was almost perfect at 51:49 front/rear.
