BMW drops touch functionality in some cars due to a chip shortage

As compensation, customers will receive a $500 option credit.

Many automakers have had to cease offering certain high-tech features to their products. Some companies even had to suspend production at some plants due to the global chip shortage. BMW will also be hard hit, with the Bavarian firm having to remove touchscreen functionality from some of its models.

Bimmerfest reported the information. It stated that the decision to eliminate touch functionality from the Central Information Display in a number of vehicles started production this week was made to preserve production levels until the end. This announcement was made eight days ago.

This does not mean that the cars will be built without any infotainment systems. While the system will still work, it won’t have touchscreen control. The iDrive controller and all other buttons on the center console will continue to work. Side note: BMW introduced touch functionality to its iDrive infotainment systems in 2016 with the iDrive 5.

Here are the models temporarily shipped without touchscreen functions:

G20 3 Series

G22/G23 4 Series Coupe & Convertible

G26 4 Series Gran Coupe (excluding i4)

G29 Z4

G05/G06/G07 – X5, X6, X7

You should be aware that the 6UY option code is on the BMW’s window sticker. This code does not allow touch functionality to the infotainment system. The automaker will offer a $500 option credit if you decide to buy it. Bimmerfest reports that dealers will need to sign forms confirming acceptance of the change.

Edmunds called BMW to confirm the information. The automaker stated that the “measure is a result industry-wide supply chain problems which are affecting automobile manufacturing worldwide and limiting the availability of certain features or options.”
