BMW iX2 Electric Crossover Revealed For The First Times

The exhaust tip doesn’t fool anyone.

BMW has not yet revealed the plug-in hybrid X2 However, the company is already planning the next step towards electrification and will eliminate the combustion engine entirely. The prototype was found somewhere in Sweden and looked almost identical to the forthcoming X2 xDrive 25,e right down to its badge at the tailgate.

The “Hybrid Test Vehicle” stickers that were on the PHEV X2 prototypes are now replaced with “Electric Test Vehicle” labels. These labels are located on the front doors and at back between the logos that denote the model’s full title. BMW even retained the single exhaust tip from the hybrid variant. However, our spy tells us that it is not connected to anything and this is a pure electric vehicle.

The test vehicle also had the same fuel caps as the X2 xDrive25e. However, the one on front fenders is likely to be removed from the production model. This is because the iX3 will have its charging port on the right-hand quarter panel. The bumper’s round fog lights are stickers. Production models will likely incorporate them into the headlights, as was the case with a PHEV prototype earlier in the year. The X2 will look cleaner without the small clusters. This, we believe, will make it more appealing to the crossover.

We don’t have any details about the powertrain at the moment, but we expect the electric X2 to benefit from BMW’s fifth generation drivetrain, which is tailored for EVs. It will debut on BMW’s iX3 before it’s installed in the i4 or iNext.

Logic says BMW will sell the electric X2 under the “iX2”, as its larger brother, the iX3, has been named. We also know that the company has trademarked everything iX1 to iX9. Bavaria’s new high-riding EV will be based upon the refreshed X2 and will launch in 2020.
