The carbon-fiber roof is now standard on the E92 M3, but there are other subtle details that indicate that this prototype is the new CSL.
A number of frequent visitors to Nurburgring, as well as close friends of WorldCarFans’ driving enthusiast club, Carfreaks.net, took photos of what appears be an E92 CSL ( Coupe/Sport, Lightweight). The previous generation E46 CSL is distinguished by a 10% improvement in power to weight. It was designed as a club-racer version for purists of the standard M3 and includes many features that increase performance and decrease weight. It was distinguished visually by its’ carbon fibre roof, front and back bumper fascias with integrated carbon–fiber reinforced plastic (CFP splitters), special 19-inch wheels, and a decklid featuring an integrated rear spoiler.
The carbon-fiber roof is now standard on the E92 M3. However, there are still subtle details that indicate this prototype is the new CSL. The rear decklid features a “duck bill” spoiler, the front bumper fascia has CFP sides flaps, and the “M3” grille nameplate on the front fender is covered in black tape. This suggests that the CSL nameplate is there, just like the E46 generation.
It was the first time that the E46 CSL was unveiled at Frankfurt Motor show 2001. Therefore, it is easy to speculate (judging from the lack of camouflage), that the E92 CSL could be debuting at Frankfurt next Week. Let’s hope so.
