BMW M5 Competition Drag Races Dodge Challenger Hellcat In V8 Battle

Dodge is stronger, but BMW has all-wheel drive.

Coches.net hosts two drag races: a Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat, and a BMW M5 Competition. The M5 can use all its electronic aids while the second run keeps it in rear-drive mode. The video is presented in Spanish but you don’t have to be fluent in Spanish to understand what’s happening.

The Challenger SRT Hellcat is the clear winner in this challenge. The 6.2-liter supercharged V8 still produces 707 horsepower (527 Kilowatts) 650 poundfeet (881 Newton meters) of torque. This is 717 HP (535 kW), and 656 Lb-ft (890Nm) respectively for the powerplant following the 2019 model year. This video shows the six-speed manual transmission, instead of the optional eight speed automatic.

The BMW M5 Competition, on the other hand, boasts 617 horsepower (460 kW) as well as 553 lbft (750 Nm), of torque. Only one gearbox option is the eight-speed automatic. This sedan has a major advantage: it features an advanced all-wheel drive system that can transmit all power to the rear, if desired by the driver.

The BMW wins the first race with a huge lead. But there is a reason. The driver needs to just mash the throttle, and then wait for all-wheel drive and launch controls. This is not available for the Challenger Hellcat with its manual gearbox. To get a good start, the Dodge driver must balance throttle and clutch inputs.

The second race in rear-wheel-drive mode starts with a smoky burnout. This is enough to give Challenger an edge.
