It’s not easy for the less powerful 997.2-generation Turbo S.
The BMW M5 CS is the flagship model in the 5 Series range. Although it’s big, luxurious, and full of horsepower and torque, is it faster than the Porsche 911 Turbo S 10 years ago? The Carwow video compares the super sedan to a 997.2-generation Turbo S.
The BMW is powered by a twin-turbocharged, 4.4-liter V8 with 626 horsepower (635 metric hp, 473 kilowatts) and 553 pound feet (750 Newton-meters). All that power is routed through an eight-speed auto to all four wheels. The Porsche has all-wheel drive. However, it is powered by a twin-turbo flat-six 3.8-liter engine that produces 530 horsepower (395 kW) as well as 516 lbft (700 Nm).
The BMW is 4,023 pounds (1.825 kgs) heavier than the Porsche’s curb weight of 3,494-lb (1.585-kg). However, it’s also stronger. It is powerful enough to lift the BMW from the Porsche’s line and keep it there until the end. The has a slightly faster start and is enough to keep 911 in second. The Porsche crossed the line in 11.2 seconds, compared to 11.1 seconds for the BMW.
The BMW won the first rolling race with both cars in their most comfortable settings. Although the BMW accelerates faster than the Porsche, the difference in speed is less in the second race. Both cars must be in their sportiest settings with their gearboxes in manual mode. Although the BMW wins, the Porsche is not as close.
Their stopping power was demonstrated in the final test. Although the BMW is heavier than the Porsche, its brakes can bring it to an abrupt halt.
Although the Porsche 911 Turbo s 997.2 was an insane car a decade back, it still has the ability to compete with today’s high-performance machines. Although it may not have been able to beat the BMW in one test, the 911 Turbo S still impressed.
