In this fight, weight is the decisive factor.
Daniel Abt got a hold of a brand new BMW CS, and Audi RS7 to race in drag races. Both of these big sedans are incredibly fast. Let’s compare them. These two cars are very similar in terms of power. From a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 engine, the BMW produces 626 horsepower (467 Kilowatts) and 553 poundfeet (775 Newton-meters). Audi produces 592 horsepower (441 kW) as well as 590 lbft (800 Nm), from a twin-turbo, 4.0-liter V8. Both models are all-wheel-drive. Weight is the main difference. The M5 CS weighs 4,189 pounds (1.900 kilograms), while the RS7 weighs in at 4,718 pounds (2.140 kilograms). As you might expect, 529 pounds (240 kilograms) makes a significant difference in a drag race.
The Audi first drag race shows its strength, gaining a lead at the line. The RS7 pulls ahead and the M5 CS gains traction. The BMW accelerates ahead of the Audi, leaving it in its wake. The RS7 is 0.08 seconds slower at 62 mph (100 km/h), but it is shockingly 2.28 seconds behind when sprinting from 62 mph up to 124 mph (100% to 200 kph). The BMW is in the lead in the second race. The M5 CS is a fast car and takes off. The RS7 was 0.32 seconds slower at 62 mph and 1.71 seconds slower at 124 mph. Finally, the race from a roll is where the Audi’s extra torque may give the RS7 an edge. It doesn’t. It accelerates quickly, and the M5 CS sedan can’t keep up.
