It will initially underpin models in the premium midsize segment.
With the launch of the Neu Klasse platform, BMW will move into the next phase of its electrification strategy. The architecture is in development. It is expected that the 3 Series fully electric vehicle will be available in 2025. Oliver Zipse, CEO of the automaker, confirmed that the new platform will initially focus on models in the premium midsize segment.
Zipse stated that the Neue Klasse would be in production by the middle of the next decade at BMW’s new plant in Hungary. The new architecture will only be available with an electric powertrain. This is contrary to earlier reports that claimed the Neue Klasse would also support combustion-powered models.
Zipse explained why BMW’s strategy has changed.
The Neue Klasse will be used in electric vehicles of other segments after its initial launch. Automotive News claims that the architecture will allow for a wide range of zero emission vehicles. This includes models from the high-volume segment and exclusive high-performance models. The company’s combustion-fueled models will remain on other platforms.
The 3Series Electric Vehicle (EV) will go on sale in 2025. It will be very different from the I3 currently available in China. This EV conversion is based on the existing 3 Series, and does not have a dedicated platform to support electric vehicles. The China-only electric sedan is equipped with a 66.1 kWh lithium battery pack. It can travel up to 327 miles (526 km) between charges. However, this figure is based on China’s CLTC regime which is generally generous.
