BMW Reminisces on 20 Years of MotoGP Safety Cars

You can’t name a safer safety car than Z8. We’ll wait.

BMW’s go-faster M Division has provided MotoGP with some of the most innovative safety cars that the motorsport world has ever witnessed since 1999. The 20 th anniversary is approaching and the Bavarians decided to go back in time and refresh their MotoGP Safety Car trivia.

The focus of the show is on the most recent cars, such as the M2 Coupe and M4 Coupe. However, we also get to see the stunning Z8 that was used in the 2002 season. The MotoGP scene was graced by the Z4 M Coupe five years later. In 2011, the 1 Series M Coupe also made its debut. We found them all more interesting and appropriate than others, as we would rather see the Z4 M Coupe in MotoGP than the X6M used during the 2009 season.

Next year, what will they use? The official MotoGP safety car could be the M8 depending on how the M8 is received. To increase the visibility of the M-spec versions of these crossovers, the M or X4M that have been teased might also be used.

BMW MotoGP’s partnership with MotoGP doesn’t stop at safety cars. The German automaker will also give away a free M car for the fastest qualifying driver of the season. Marc Marquez has been the only one to receive the keys to the M6 Coupe (2013) and M4 Coupe (2014). M6 Convertible (2015). M2 Coupe (2016). M4 CS 2017 and M3CS (2018).
