BMW trademarks 'M2' moniker for new 2-Series

To make way for a new FWD entry level 1er, the 1-Series will be converted into a 2-Series.

Although details have been slowly coming out about this story for some time, it seems like things are becoming more clearer with each passing detail.

This is the basic news:

To make way for a new FWD entry level vehicle, the current BMW 1-Series will become a 2-Series.

This means that BMW is registering the name ‘M2 in Germany and the United States to ensure they have a name to name the successor to the 1-Series M.

Although a patent filing does not necessarily mean that a model has been developed, it is possible to conclude from previous reports that a future 2-Series would be the continuation and/or expansion of the 1-Series with a new series number.

Variants include a 2-Series coupe (supposedly to be called F22), F23 convertible, and an M2 performance version along with the 5-door hatch body-style model.
