BMW X1 surpasses Audi Q5 to be the top-selling premium SUV

The X1 is the most popular premium SUV in Europe at the moment, but it may not be for very long. Learn more.

The BMW X1 was Europe’s most-sold premium SUV in the first six months 2010. It barely beat the Audi Q5 by a mere 407 units. From January to June, BMW sold 44,067 units X1 units, compared with 43,660 Q5 units.

The five most popular SUVs in Europe were the Volvo XC60 (29.616 units), Land Rover Freelander (20.138 units) as well as the BMW X5 (16.565). The statistics were compiled by JATO Dynamics, a UK research company. They were published in the Automotive News.

The X1’s sales have not slowed at all. According to the company, 11,483 units were sold in July alone. The vehicle’s EUR27.200 price tag is a major advantage, which is at least EUR9,000 lower than the prices of the other top-five models.

The list may be reorganized once the 2011 model-year vehicles go on sale. These could include the Audi Q3, Saab 9-4X and Infiniti X1 rivals. Even though the MINI Countryman may not be considered a premium SUV, it could still attract buyers to the X1.

The Countryman will be EUR7,000 cheaper than the X1.
