BMW X5 M Captured Previewing a Facelift in New Spy Photos

The SUV’s upcoming update will be reflected in the mismatched fascias and hidden interior parts.

While winter is receding in northern latitudes and automakers continue to test cold-weather vehicles, BMW is one of them. While the images of the X5 M appear unremarkable they offer a glimpse into the SUV’s near future development.

These photos show that a mid-cycle refresh is in the works. First, avoid looking for deceiving panels or camouflaged areas that conceal changes. The only thing that makes this Bimmer different from the rest is its headlights. Although the lenses are identical to the current model, they have a prototype appearance and the illumination pattern is different.

This vehicle is likely an early prototype for thinner lamps. That would explain why the front fascia has a different color to the body. The front fascia and headlights were likely to have been updated for the public evaluation. The rear fascia is also black, as it is easier to conceal technology-test vehicles than using existing body panels. This tells us that the X5 will get updates front and back, although we aren’t sure how important those exterior updates will become.

Despite this, we know that there are significant interior changes. Our spy camera caught the SUV passing by the camera. The driver was hiding a large screen behind it. It looks similar to the one in the BMW iX. The screen is wide and curved to direct more attention to the driver. It will be used in other BMW models, so it’s not surprising to see it on the X5.

At this time, we don’t know when the new X5 will be available. The current-generation X5 was introduced in 2018 as a 2019 model. The hotter X5M arrived approximately one year later for 2020. This vehicle is in its early stages of testing, so you shouldn’t expect anything before 2022.
