Two BMW defiant world firsts will be presented at the 2008 Detroit Auto Show next month. A brand new twin-turbo V8 engine will be presented in a vehicle that combines both the dynamic appeal of a coupe and the versatility only offered by an SAV. BMW has created a unique production crossover: the X6 Sports Activity Coupe.
The five-door, four seater X6 redefines the coupe concept. It combines the power and flexibility of BMW’s high-riding, weight-lugging X models with a large BMW Coupe’s sporting elegance.
Two twin-turbo units are included in the X6 Sports Activity Coupe’s initial lineup. The X6 features a 4.4-litre V8 engine that produces 400 hp, 450 lb.ft. of torque, and a 3.0-litre six-cylinder that produces 300 hp. These units are called xDrive50i or xDrive35i. There are other technology options beyond the hood.
The X6 is standard with BMW’s proven xDrive all wheel-drive system. However, Dynamic Performance Control is a new feature. The DPC system splits torque between the front and rear axles. It also distributes it to either the left or right rear wheels. The X6 offers enhanced agility and stability at all speeds due to the variable distribution of torque and multiplication at each rear wheel. This allows for greater steering precision and abrupter turns, regardless of whether you are accelerating or decelerating.
The new BMW X6 will be arriving at BMW Dealerships in America during the second quarter 2008. The pricing and options will be announced in the months ahead. Continue reading for more information.
