It was outsold both by the Mercedes R63 AMG (AMG) and the Honda NSX (NSX).

The three-pedal Z4 is difficult to find, and press images are scarcer than hens teeth. This led us to open BMW’s German configurator to build the roadster with the six speed manual. This convertible is a rare find in Down Under, where only two people purchased it with a stick-shift transmission in just two years.

The sDrive20i base version was the only one that offered it. This is the same as the eight-speed automatic transmission. It will continue to be the only option if you are looking for the entry-level Z4. After two years of poor sales, BMW Australia has decided to discontinue the do-it yourself gearbox. The manual version was outsold three times by the Honda NSX and two cars by the old Mercedes R63 AMG. We are as shocked as you that the family hauler, a fast and powerful vehicle for families, was still being sold in its original form. The end of the manual gearbox is near with the explosion in electric vehicles. Non-sports cars are becoming less and less equipped with a clutch pedal. Only the entry-level models of mainstream brands permit drivers to manually row their gears. In the performance car segment, manuals are rare and far between. While there are some notable exceptions (Porschesprings), the manual is a dying breed.

BMW is doing its part in saving the manual by offering the M3 Sedan as well as the M4 Coupe with a clutch pedal. The M4 Convertible, while all-wheel-drive and manual-only, is likely to be the same as the M3 Touring, due to arrive in late 2022 or early 2023. Although the 2 Series Coupe was recently revealed, it is an automatic-only vehicle. However, it is widely believed that it will also be available with a manual. The Z4 with a manual in Australia was only 0.54 percent among all Z4s that BMW sold since the beginning of 2019. RWD-only sDrive20i manual is slightly slower at 62 mph (100 km/h), but it has a slightly higher topspeed. The  manual-equipped Z4 has been removed from the company’s Australian configurator. However, it is still available on European markets.
