This is the Future of BMW’s M Cars?
The Gran Coupe BMW 2-Series Gran Coupe It’s finally here, and I’m not sure if it is a coupe or a BMW. It has 4 doors, which makes it a sedan. Second, it has a transversely mounted 4-cylinder 4-cylinder engine and front wheel drive architecture, which is very different from a BMW. See the future M2 Artist Aksyonov Ninita created striking renderings of the Gran Coupe.
The 2-series Gran Coupe does not follow the 2-series coupe’s design, but instead shares a platform and is based on the X1 or X2 SUVs. The X1/X2 SUVs also provide the engines for the 2-Series Gran Coupe. Base 228i will have a turbo 2.0-liter Inline-four that produces 228 horsepower, 258 lbft of torque and 228 horsepower. The M235i uses a more powerful turbo-four of 301 horsepower and 332lb-ft. These engines are mated with BMW’s 8-speed automatic transmission and AWD system.
It’s difficult to predict what powertrain configuration will be used in the future M2. Gran Coupe’s design is closer to an SUV than a traditional BMW car platform so there isn’t necessarily space for a straight-6 in its engine bay. The M2 Gran Coupe will likely use a powerful 4-cylinder engine and follow the Mercedes CLA 45 AMG formula.
