Bonkers Baja Ford Mustang is the Pony Car Crossover That We Really Want

Bonkers Baja Ford Mustang is the Pony Car Crossover That We Really Want
It is available in Seattle starting at $5,500

We need to be honest before we get into the soaring glory of this Fox Body Ford MustangLX off-roader. This car may be a favorite of one of the Motor1.com editors. It’s time to forget the we collective on this piece. I, Christopher Smith, think that this crazy build it is amazing. My colleagues agree, but I will present the bonkers 1991 Mustang LX for sale on Craigslist in Seattle. I am a huge rally fan and have a 1995 Mustang GT convertible that needs a suspension lift, gravel tires, and a garage with a Mustang GT convertible. It seems there is a Motor1.com plot to convince me to start my project or to just buy this car.

We Love Weird Cars!

This car has everything I need in an off-road Mustang. It was originally an entry-level LX, with a lowly 4-cylinder engine under the hood. It now has a modified 5.0-liter V8 with GT40 heads, an Edelbrock intake and a B-series cam. Although power is not known, a strong running 5.0 engine with these upgrades and a free flowing exhaust should produce around 300 horsepower. Let’s face it, you didn’t click the button to learn more about the engine.

Mustang Baja

Because Fox Body Mustang convertibles are as rigid as a beach ball, the first modification was to add frame connectors. The suspension components can be upgraded to improve adjustability, but they are otherwise quite normal. Simple spacers provide the front suspension lift of 1.5 inches, while adjustable control arms at the back give it a more substantial lift. Five-lug spindles and a five-lug back axle are sourced from a 2001 Mustang. 3.73 gears assist with acceleration.

The wheel wells required more space to accommodate the larger off-road tires so they were hacked up. For safety and reinforcement of the chassis, a full roll cage was added to the interior. The interior has been gutted and covered with bedliner material, to better withstand the elements. The convertible roof is gone, and the only protection from the elements is provided by a custom-designed roof rack. The back has a unique stereo system that was custom-designed for this vehicle. People, I am in love with this place.

Could the Mustang-based Crossover be This Cool?

I reached out to the seller to learn that the vehicle runs and drives well, and is comfortable on the highway. This doesn’t stop me from wanting to purchase this Baja basher, nor does the $5,500 asking price. This car is unique, it’s affordable, it’s brilliant, and I have great respect for the seller, as he built it himself. The project is documented in Corral.net. But if you are like me and long for a Pony Car that can play in the dirt, this one is a must-have. According to me, buyers are already lined up and that could include me.
