Overall, initial quality has never been this bad. However, this doesn’t necessarily mean that new vehicles have become worse. It’s more a combination traditional problems with low inventory, high costs, and missing parts due to the pandemic.
This is the main takeaway of the 2022 study. It was published on June 28. J.D. J.D. The 223 questions are answered by vehicle owners. They are then ranked according to the number of problems per 100 vehicles (PP100). A higher number means that there are more problems than usual. For 2022, the industry average was 180 problems per 100 vehicles (180PP100). This is an 11 percent increase over 2021 and the highest ever recorded in the study’s history.
While the industry average is up, there are some automakers that are doing better than others. General Motors is leading the pack with Buick claiming the overall top spot in brands with a score 139 PP100. Chevrolet and GMC were also among the top 10, far below the industry average. American automakers dominated this chart, with Dodge coming in second and Ford taking the last spot. Genesis and Lexus were also in the top 10. Volkswagen, Maserati and Volvo are the top five brands.

BMW won the SUV fold with the X1, and X3 premium SUVs. The Escalade and XT6 were awarded to Cadillac for their midsize premium SUVs. The Nissan Murano won the midsize SUV category, while the Chevrolet Equinox was the winner for large SUVs. The Buick Encore GX model is the only one to have won a J.D. Despite the company’s lowest overall score, the Power award was won by Buick Encore GX.
The Honda Odyssey won an award for minivans. In the truck world, Chevrolet took home the Silverado in both light-duty or heavy-duty segments. The Ford Ranger was the winner in the midsize category.
