Buick’s future vision of luxury mobility: A peek inside the brain
While the 2021 Los Angeles Auto Show has begun, another important automotive event is taking place in southern China. Auto Guangzhou 2021 will showcase all sorts of future and current offerings for China’s market. Buick offers an interesting look at the future with two distinct concepts, the GL8 Flagship or Smart Pod.
Because it is a preview of a real vehicle, we’ll begin with the GL8 Flagship. Buick’s GL8 MPV, which is not a minivan, is currently available in China. This concept gives a glimpse of future models. It’s a great taste! The vehicle starts with a bold front that seamlessly transitions into a glass roof. The flexible interior offers multiple seating options and includes a tea tray.
The driver has a 30-inch screen, a touchscreen on his/her steering wheel, and a heads up display. All of this is located in an open area that lacks a central console. Advanced autonomous capabilities mean that the driver is not required for most concept vehicles.
At least, the GL8 Flagship has provision for a driver. Smart Pod is completely driver-free. It uses the Ultimum platform to create “a bold design concept that examines the full potential advanced technologies in electrification and automated driving, as well as digitalized connectivity, delivered warmly, tactile, and luxuriously.”
The Smart Pod, as its name implies, is a simple and straightforward vehicle. The Smart Pod is a driverless vehicle that allows the occupants to climb into it. This provides a comfortable space for passengers to relax, work, or just take in the sights as they travel from one place to another. The interior is flexible and can be configured in many ways. It also includes noise-canceling technology and an air purifying system. And it’s made of sustainable materials.
The Smart Pod’s advanced artificial intelligence controls all aspects. Passengers can control the AI using voice commands. The Smart Pod can be used as a mobile office, with full internet connectivity and ambient lighting.
The Smart Pod concept is not yet in production. The GL8 Flagship concept is a glimpse into the future. However, it’s not a production sample of the next-generation GL8.
