California law allows front license plate wraps. Here's how to get one

You can’t simply print your license plate and stick to your car.

California drivers can now ditch their bulky front plates and opt for a vinyl sticker that is plate-sized. A sticker is a great option for those who live in areas that require front license plates. It eliminates the need for plastic brackets and holes in the bumper. This is especially true for modern cars that have large grilles and less room to fit a 12-inch-wide aluminum piece.

California is currently the only US state that has a front-plate requirement . We know that other states are also watching. We know that people are interested in the process, even if they don’t live in California. We were also curious so we spent some time researching these “license plate wraps”.

Not for everyone

First, not all people will be eligible to obtain a license plate sticker. The vast majority of people won’t be able to get a license plate sticker, at least not immediately. This pilot program was established under Assembly Bill 16014 in 2019. It is only open to 0.5 percent registered vehicles in California. According to the California DMV, however, the Golden State has 36.2 million more registered vehicles than any other state. This means that there is enough space for 1.8 million cars to participate in the pilot program. The sticker must be properly displayed on the car’s front fascia.

Only available through one source

It is not enough to take a picture of your license plate and have it printed up by a local vinyl shop. Alternative vehicle registrations must be confirmed with the DMV in Sacramento. At the moment, License plate Wrap is only company approved for this program.

What is the Process?

License Plate Wrap handles everything. The order includes the vehicle registration and owner’s information. The order is then submitted to Sacramento’s DMV for approval and acceptance into the pilot program. After acceptance, the DMV sends the letter to the vehicle owner and Licence Plate Wrap begins work. Stick-on plates cost $93.89, plus tax. If everything goes smoothly, you will receive a vinyl sticker version for your license plate in about one month.

Installation and removal

This reflective vinyl wrap can be applied as any other sticker. License Plate Wrap recommends that the surface be clean before applying the wrap. If you are unsure about how to do it correctly, a professional installer is able to help. The adhesive can be removed with a heat gun. It won’t harm the paint and works well with ceramic coating.

The Pilot Program

Initial testing began in 2015 using select state-owned fleet vehicles. The original plan was for the program to last until January 1, 2021. However, it has been extended with public participation through January 1, 20,23. The program will then be evaluated.
