Canoo Launches NASA Transport Vehicles at Kennedy Space Center

This is how astronauts will reach the rocket that will take their to the moon.

Two Instagram photos give us the first glimpse of Canoo’s NASA transport car in the real world. NASA’s Exploration Ground Systems technicians donned flight suits to give the vans a ride at Kennedy Space Center.

Except for the NASA branding, the vehicles are almost identical to the Canoo Lifestyle Vehicle. NASA requested that the model be available for four astronauts and three additional crew members. There needed to be space for five gear bags, four cooling units and a pad transfer bag.

NASA required an emission-free vehicle. The range does not need to be greater than 50 miles, as the distance from the rocketship to the launch site is only 9 miles. Canoo will deliver all the vehicles to the space agency from June 2023 until June 2023.

You can choose from Base, Premium or Adventure trims. The most powerful version is 300 horsepower (224 kilowatts) with 332 pound-feet (332 Newton-meters), of torque. An 80-kilowatt hour battery will provide a range of 250 miles (402 km).

NASA’s Project Artemis aims to send humans back to the moon. The Canoo contract forms part of NASA’s Project Artemis. SpaceX is responsible for the development of the lunar landing craft. The uncrewed first test will be a flight around the moon. The second launch will include people aboard, and will take place no later than May 2024. We’ll then send astronauts back to lunar surface.

General Motors and Lockheed Martin have collaborated on the new lunar-rover, which will transport people across to the moon. The vehicle is shown as an open vehicle with a roll hoops and a cargo bed. It will be capable autonomous driving.
