CarCopter Flying Race Car Concept Aims To Revolutionize Motorsport

CES is always awe-inspiring.

The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) offers everything, from new computers to robot vacuum cleaners. There are always some items that don’t fit under the traditional umbrella, but there are still some. A flying F1 race car concept was recently featured on RobbReport.

The concept is a compromise between a racing drone, and a Formula 1 racing car. The Carcopter will propel the craft to a top speed at 153 mph (246.2 km/h) using a series of hydro-fuel-cell motors. MACA, a French aviation startup, built the machine. The goal is to launch it on F1 circuits.

Motorsport fans will soon be irritated by the idea of a flying Formula 1 vehicle. The brains behind this operation are ex-fighter pilot Thierry de Boisvilliers, and Michael Krollak, an Airbus executive. We can’t forget to mention the fact that the project aims to reduce harmful carbon emissions from traditional combustion engines used on Formula 1 tracks.

F1 has been exploring the possibility of using synthetic fuels for some time. The world’s most successful open-wheel racing series has helped drivers stay on the ground. While we don’t know if this is a support series or a replacement for F1, it’s a very striking prospect.

This is a fringe idea aside, but it’s one of the most beautiful flying car concepts we’ve ever seen. MACA hopes to have the final model in place by 2021, and to be on the track by 2023.
